As a book collector and book dealer, I am often asked questions such as 'What's your favourite book?' 'How old is your oldest book?' How much is my grandfather's prayer book worth? Where can I get a poster from the East End?' I was encouraged by Mathew Reisz, the editor of the Jewish Quarterly at the time, to write articles that revealed some of the quirks of book collecting, highlighting some of the more idiosyncratic aspects of the trade. My first piece appeared in the summer edition of 2003 and the current editor, Rachel Lasserson, has graciously given me permission to reproduce those 16 articles for a wider audience.
